IE beta unleashed

Eager beaver

THE MIGHTY VOLE has used the first day of MIX08, to release its beta of Internet Explorer 8. Be warned, the release is a very early beta developer version, for all those eager-beaver developers who want to get a head start on preparing their web pages for the new browser. Regular users should probably avoid it like the plague unless they have some kind of computer death wish. Not to worry though, a later beta for us non-developer plebs will be available soonish.

IE8's big feature is, of course, its better standards compliance, meaning that the Acid2 test, for evaluating CSS 2 compliance, renders correctly. But the crafty boffins down at the Web Standards Project have a newer, tougher test called Acid3, which the Vole's Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 can't quite seem to get the hang of just yet.

Microsoft has additionally developed a group of CSS 2.1 test cases, which it reckons should make it a bit easier to test specific features and see which bits are supported and which bits aren't; This shows the company is taking these standards (or just the various fines and lawsuits it keeps getting slammed with) a lot more seriously.

The Vole has made sure to add an IE 7 emulation button which switches the browser back to a standard IE 7 rendering engine, for those who don't like their browsers to be standard conforming. But in order to use this feature the browser needs to be restarted. Sigh.

A look at some of IE8's brand spanking new features reveals two worthy of a mention, WebSlices and Activities. Activities lets users perform actions on highlighted text within a Web page, similar to the way in which some Firefox extensions can be accessed by highlighting text and right-clicking.

The WebSlices feature subscribes visitors to a sort of RSS of the particular site they want a slice of and puts it in their Favorites tool bar. Once a WebSlice is subscribed to, the user can view content from that site from the tool bar or in a sidebar without having to launch the actual site. For example, users can use Web slices to subscribe to a single eBay auction.

Security wise, a "Safety Filter" replaces the old phishing filter. Users can decide whether to it turn on or off. It supposedly checks to see if a specific site is known to be a phishing or malware site, and also allows users to report sites they suspect of being malicious. If the filter is turned on then Web site information will be sent to the Vole's servers.

I have both FF3 and IE8

They both have problems so far on IE8 Netflix watch instantly don't work and FF3 the damn home button and back buttons disappear from time to time
Some good things about both is that they are both easy on the eyes, the sun.com.uk don't crash FF3 like it did FF2 , and in IE8 you can set it emulate IE7

actually...

I've been using it all morning and had only a couple of rendering issues (most notable: google maps). But everything else seems ok, despite the "early" beta stage. And for the worst cases there's a "Emulate IE7" button.......

IT GETS Worse Overnight.

Loaded IE8 Beta from Microsoft thru MS download newsletter & it seemed: snappier & crisper with brighter display from, sys; lcd(not bright display in design). Then I noticed CURSOR wouldn't go where mouse pointed it, instead about 10 spaces previous & had to use arrows to move cursor to position. Yet that was all. Today When going to usual group of crime moles, it simply displayed page from History & would not display up to date page at all, about 3/4 of all favorites did that & it did not change by hand entry of web address into address bar.

I tried: emulate IE7, yet saw no change, problems persisted, However, cursor started to go where mouse pointer clicked it. WOW. So Far :DO NOT USE IE8 BETA, UNLESS YOU LOVE Small glitches, I will probably remove it, from that partition, so at least localize problem-s.

Yesterday I was Quite tired after staying up all night FIXING U.S. Elections, So I am sorry if My Doctor of Divinical Service was more Acacdian yesterday morning than Usual. DDS TA. Often while traveling it s same story.
Heres Great Tip, Cook Lemon Supreme Cake with Chocalate Milk, it Tastes Like GINGER BAKER. ER, i MEAN CAKER, ER, CAKE.OR SOMETHINNG.BTW ,sorry if I insulted Ms.Jo E Follie yesterday, I meant: Jo-Jo was Kind of Beast Sold in Market of New Orleans, I'm Ole Slaver & doing it right....hahaha,braunze shouper... well jsu.it watch out for IE8 Beta Problems.

Remember, there is NO Report Mechanism I know of, in IE8 Beta & you will probably will have to uninstall.

MIX08 is sold out.

Imagine my dismay! No TAO, of Teng, beach or any other kind tsingtao. No watching Guy Ballmer and Steve Kawasaki Together Again Live.

I'm left off watching Numberwahng, eating a cold Digby's Chicken Ceasar, and feeling a bit Shaggy; the scrawny one who doesn't wash and his dog, a soonish pleb, avoided like the plague.

All because I wouldn't opt in to conforming behaviour, and thingie that cheksbox giving blokes the right to ogle my profile.

It works... but...

I'm using it now, and it works... but it makes IE-Hacked sites painfully obvious. The Inq site is even uglier than normal, but at least it's readable.

Other sites are totally unreadable in IE8 mode... but at least you can toggle to IE7 mode.

For webdevs, it's mandatory to see what will be broken by moving to standards, and fix it up... but for others... don't bother for now.
