Iphone upgrade doesn't work

Causes even more problems
Wednesday, 20 August 2008, 09:55

THE TRUE AND HOLY upgrade which was supposed to fix the shonky engineering which is Apple's Iphone does not work.

Apple had hoped to avoid one of the largest product recalls in its history by releasing a firmware patch to stop its Jesus phone from dropping calls.

Currently users of the handset have to sit completely still when using Steve Jobs' most brilliant dumping on users yet, otherwise they will be disconnected.

This is due to the fact that the engineering wizzos at Apple thought it better to use a backward and cheap Infineon 3G chipset chipset that did not work. This is the same chipset that has been playing up in exactly the same way in 3G phones across Europe for four years. Yet for some reason, Apple thought it would work on its phones much better.

Like most things to do with Apple, the firmware upgrade was conducted in secret, we don't know that it was trying to fix the chip problem. In fact Apple has refused to confirm that it has a chip problem. Its forum did say that the patch was an attempt to rectify "poor user experiences".

However the upgrade does not solve the problem. What it does is messes up the GPS function and creates shedloads of others instead.

One user said that since the upgrade his scrolling was jerky. We understand this is a common problem with Apple users and we recommend cream.

Another complained that the upgrade had turned his Iphone into a nice looking brick. This is annoying because he felt he would have been less likely to queue in the rain for a brick.

Others said they would happily queue in the rain for a brick if Steve told them to. µ

Spare me

I am not feelin' this article. It would be a shame if Apple had to recall their new phone, if Apple does they will. I own an iPhone, the first one, and I must say I‘m relieved I did not ‘leap’ to get the 3G variant. But like many new products, it sometimes takes awhile to get all the kinks ironed out. You could always get an Instinct from Sprint.<cough>

Geez.

I don't own an iPhone, and don't plan to, so I'm not a fanboy. but geez.... what happened to objective reporting?

rubbish

the claim that current iphone users 'have to sit completely still' in order to complete a call is utter nonsense, perhaps articles regarding said hardware should be written by someone with some knowledge of it in future?

...

"One user said that since the upgrade his scrolling was jerky. We understand this is a common problem with Apple users and we recommend cream." I take this is a (subtle?) joke, and if so I don't get the punchline. Seeing as I don't eat Jerky, what's the deal with it and cream? If not, then that means that, as usual, Nick was smoking some strong s$£%.

Not all of us....

I was #2 in line on release day and bought my nice 16GB White 3G. Aside from a handful of phone crashes and a few app crashes, I have had NO problem whatsoever. The phone portion works just fine, and I have had no more or less dropped calls or signal issues than I had on my previous LG Cu500 with AT&T. In short, not all of the problems being reported affect all or even a large number of us. I have several friends who also have bought the phones and likewise have had no problems. I do have one friend who complains about the cell coverage. He has the 8G model (the rest of us have 16G). Maybe there's something wonky there?

The 2.0.2 patch...

... caused a BSOD during the update process on my 32bit Vista Business computer last night. Needless to say, I didn't enjoy the 1.5 hours it took to restore the ipod and add back all my music.

Basic feature..

is handover * - if your phone can't do this, you've screwed up badly, as every mobile phone for the last 20 years has had to be able to do this. * "Handover" is when your phone moves from talking to one cell site transmitter to talking to another cell site transmitter. The phone tracks all the cell site signals around it, and when the signal from another cell is better (within certain parameters), your phone is "handed off" from one cell to the better one. It is this ability alone that allows you to keep a call going when you move around. Without this, your phone would drop calls almost every time you turn a corner is a big city (cities have many small cells). or every couple of minutes when travelling (there will be a string of base stations that run alongside a motorway to give coverage there - but if you're driving along a motorway, you're handing off to a new cell every couple of minutes.)

No problems here

I've had fewer problems with signal strength, dropped calls, clarity, battery life than I did with my razer. While people are quick to jump all over it... this phone has worked better than I expected in every way. Typically if you have a problem, you complain, but if you have a good experience you don't feel the need to do so.

White Screen of Death

Love the comment above "Aside from a handful of phone crashes and a few app crashes" You know your a fanboy when your product behaves exactly like vista does and still say there's nothing wrong with the phone. GL if you ever use your phone to dial 911.

Funny article

This article is hilarious! :) I guess some people can't take a joke :) This seems to be quite common among Apple users unfortunately.

2.0.2

Worked fine, improved the 3G so its now 3 bars not one and data is Wifi like. It also fixed the gps for me so now it works instantly, both in an outdoors, rather than wait a couple of minutes for it to give up. I wonder how many people are like me?

HaHa

I have yet to experience a single problem with my 16gb black 3g. I do a long commute and often take calls and browse at +60mph without any such issues....

Problem? Impossible!

if Apple says one thing and reality says another, guess who's right?
