Rumours abound about real reasons for Nvidia's failing chips
Taiwanese sources chip in with their thoughts
THE TAIWANESE RUMOUR MILL is rife with speculation about Nvidia’s recent admission as to why exactly it’s taking a $150-200 million charge this quarter for a supposed product failure.
The chipmaker was slightly ambiguous as to what the problems were, saying only that they stemmed from die/packaging materials used in previous generation notebooks and made worse by the thermal design of some of these notebooks.
But now Dodgytimes reports that sources in Taiwan suggest Nvidia’s problem is probably more likely linked either to the solder bumping process - the process of joining a chip to a substrate without shorting, using solder - employed by one or more of Nvidia's manufacturing partners. Another rumour claims the problem is linked directly to the firm's printed circuit board (PCB) substrate suppliers.
Some even claim the debacle is due to our Charlie dancing around his quad-core ouiji board with a graphics chip apparently wirelessly attached to his nether regions.
Institutional investor sources in Taiwan are saying the problem products are the 2007 Nvidia Geforce 8500M-series graphics chips, mainly due to a glitch in bump processing. It’s also noted that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Siliconware Precision Industrial (SPIL) are all firms which provide Nvidia with bump processing services. So they’d be the likely suspects then.
As for rumours the problems are PCB substrate based, it’s thought by some that green paint used by one of the suppliers, Nay Ya Print Circuit Board (NPC), could have lowered the expected heat resistance or that a certain adhesive used - Ajinomoto Build-up Film (ABF) - might not have been robust enough.
Still, in the words of Rudyard Kipling, there are 40 million reasons for failure, but not a single excuse. µ

Charlie does love graphics!
"Some even claim the debacle is due to our Charlie dancing around his quad-core ouiji board with a graphics chip apparently wirelessly attached to his nether regions."Well, you can't deny it - he is *very* passionate about graphics! ;)
In Less Than Year....
As Todays Whirls of Intradependence in Washington & Crown Colonies continue I found intresting few sentences from, Rog.Its White house or Maybe RED.. By Q2 2009, when it's successor, the 'RS8800' is set to ship with the SB800 southbridge on board, IGPs look set to command the market, from the performance segment down (Ultie is Extremeist segment)
Notice that 8500 Stuff is being dumped from Game Card & 8800 migrating to Chipset. Oh,Boy. Ahso, 8X00 has been around for two years, So Probably STILL NOT Ultie, Thus mere Performance Set.
